This is very useful, I'll use it for training purposes I think. (I realize now that I bought my black and white watercolo tubes for nothing... Ah well, whatever ^^)

Thanks for the advice.
I have a think if I use the thinned colors in tempera or acrylics I get the same effect as the watercolors? If it is not then what is the difference between the two colors in the final result?
Yesterday I did a test by diluting the acrylic and I found the effect is identical to that of watercolor ... but perhaps you could give me some advice ... thanks ...
Sorry for my English not very well but I'm Italian...
testdrive Featured By Owner Apr 23, 2009
I'm not sure; I'm not very familiary with tempera and acrylic, but they are water based so it should be similar.
martinanitram Featured By Owner Apr 24, 2009
Thank you for your reply...but I've noticed that if I use acrylic colors they will form around a darker border. This is because the acrylic colors have an adhesive that doesn't stand up to very high dilutions.

P.S.:Sorry for my english not very well...I'm Italian

Wow, this is by far one of the best tutorial for watercolors I've seen so far : D
Since you seem to be pretty familiar with this media; would mind answering a few questions? c:
testdrive Featured By Owner Sep 24, 2008
sure. what's up?
Nurak Featured By Owner Sep 30, 2008
Well, I've wondered which brand of watercolors you're using. I'm not that familiar with watercolors in tubes.
And I've wondered whether you're familiar with Gouache (spelling?). Someone told me it would be something similiar to watercolor. Is it better than normal watercolors or are WC still the best?
testdrive Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2008
I use ShinHan watercolors; I've had them since I was like.....6 and I still use them (that was 14 years ago)
watercolors, no matter what brand, are good, in my opinion. Just squeeze them out on a palette, let it dry over night, and use it then. I never use my watercolors wet. They're all dried on the palette and I use them by adding water to it.

I don't use gouache. I've never used it before.

aah, okay. Thanks for the info. :3

I'm mostly a self tought watercolor-er. Reading over this has helped confirm alot of things I already know, but also has tought me a few things as well. I get so impatience with layers, but I will try to be better. You are right, it looks better then a boat load of paint all at once.

thanks for this enlightening tutor! It's nice to know I'm doing some things right!
